Spitzer MySpace pageGovernor Spitzer attempts to capitalize on sudden fame through MySpace page

(Albany, NY) New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who was recently plucked from gubernatorial obscurity through his illicit connections to a high profile call-girl service, is apparently attempting to take advantage of his new found fame.  Mr. Spitzer's long dormant MySpace page has undergone numerous changes in the last several days including the deletion of dozens of photos of the governor, alone and in groups, at various house parties and bars and on spring break in an undisclosed location, replacing them instead with a select few professional-looking head shots.

Mr. Spitzer has also been accepting “friend requests,” the overture through which a person's online social network grows, by the thousands, most likely from complete strangers.

Other new uploads include video clips of Governor Spitzer, who describes himself in his profile on the site as an “aspiring Appalachian musician,” performing several banjo solos including “Turkey in the Straw” and “Pickin' n' Grinnin'.”

In one video the governor, donning a large brimmed hat, launches into a rousing, if severely technically and musically flawed, picking frenzy.  In another, after a couple false starts to tune his instrument, Mr. Spitzer appears to lose his place in the music, finishing well before the pre-recorded downhome accompaniment.  Following several failed attempts to rejoin the karaoke backup jug band an increasingly frustrated Mr. Spitzer reaches for the camera before the video goes blank.

It is not certain if the governor has any real chance to capitalize on his sudden celebrity.  Country music record producer Vince Cargill said, "One word alone describes [Mr. Spitzer's] banjo playing: Totally amateur.”

Still, Mr. Cargill acknowledged that the public can have a lurid fascination with scandal created celebrities and that less reputable producers might offer such people one time record deals with hopes for a quick profit.

If history is to be an judge, however, the governor's music career dreams will likely go the way of Monica Lewinsky's handbags.
